by Kimberly McGraw, HHC
It is the first day that I am driving with my windows down and I can smell it coming. Ah Spring! I sniff the air and it smells clean and fresh. The rain is about to come and wash away the winter, and I feel the sensation to do the same to my home and my body. I get home and take out my cd player, favorite albums, cleaning supplies and extra large trashcans. I am getting ready to emerge from my cave from my seasonal hibernation. I can feel the urge to shed the clutter and calories I have acquired during my winter nap. It is time stretch and jump-start my body for summer. Like any good workout this is going to take time, so I go to my calendar and set aside a weekend to do my annual spring cleaning and cleansing.
I start my weekend with cleaning. Like they say, “A cluttered home is a cluttered mind”, or something like that. I have realized the connection between cleaning my home and providing my mind with open space to work on my body. I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the task of cleaning the mess I have accumulated so I break it down into four easy steps. Step one; I make a list of major jobs that need to be taken care of room by room. Living room: clean mess, vacuum, dust. Bathroom: toilet, sink, floors. You get the picture. Step two, I pick a room. I prefer to start with the messiest room in the house. It gives me a sense of accomplishment along with momentum to complete the remaining rooms. Once I‘ve chosen the lucky room I take everything that isn’t where it belongs and put it in a pile in the middle of the floor. I know where some of this stuff goes, but I also know it is faster to just make the pile. I take care to check all of my favorite hiding places like junk drawers, closets, boxes, and anywhere else I have been hording things. Once everything I can find has been incorporated into the colossal pile that is now filling the center of the room I sort it into four new piles: Trash, storage, put away and give away. I am generous with things to give away, knowing I have more then I will ever need. It feels like I am losing weight already. I move onto step three, putting away the piles. It is hard to believe that I am almost done. Now for the final step, step four. It is time to go back to the original list and complete my major cleaning tasks. With my radio playing time flies by, and before I know it I have finished.
On to the next room.
Now I move on to cleansing my mind, body and spirit. Some people like to cleanse quickly with a fast, but I prefer to transition slowly, as in nature. My goal is to slowly wash away the winter and be ready to bud and blossom for the summer. I start to make a spring food-shopping list, cutting back on the heavy foods I have been ingesting for the winter. In spring I want to eat foods that are light and dry, keeping away from heavy oils, dense fruits, nuts, highly salted and sweetened food and dairy. I need to purify my blood and get rid of the toxins and fats that I have been storing, so I naturally go for big leafy greens. I load up on kale, romaine, and mustard greens. For fruits I look for anything with high antioxidant levels, like dried fruits, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries. I steer clear of the heavy bananas, dates, figs and guava that will slow me down . Luckily my favorite grains, quinoa and brown rice are especially appropriate for my list, while I avoid allergenic grains like wheat. I am done shopping and I am ready to go back to my beautifully cleaned home.
My weekend is coming to an end, and I feel a new bounce to my step. I am ready to push aside my winter coat for a spring jacket and go breathe in the aroma of new flowers and fresh rain. I look forward to enjoying this light sensation in my mind, body and spirit until I see what changes the heat of summertime has in store for me.
